Marshall Faulk

The Ultimate Dual-Threat Running Back

Few players in NFL history revolutionized the running back position like Marshall Faulk. A rare combination of speed, vision, power, and elite receiving skills, Faulk wasn’t just a great running back—he was a complete offensive weapon.

As the engine behind the Greatest Show on Turf, Faulk redefined what a running back could be, becoming the first player in NFL history to rack up 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. His ability to torch defenses on the ground and through the air made him one of the most dangerous and unstoppable forces the game has ever seen.

A Super Bowl Champion, MVP, three-time Offensive Player of the Year, and Hall of Famer, Faulk’s legacy is cemented as one of the most dynamic players to ever play the game.

The Numbers Behind Faulk’s Greatness

  • Super Bowl Champion (XXXIV)
  • NFL MVP (2000)
  • Three-time NFL Offensive Player of the Year (1999, 2000, 2001)
  • Seven-time Pro Bowl selection
  • Six-time First-Team All-Pro
  • 12,279 career rushing yards (12th all-time)
  • 136 total touchdowns (8th all-time)
  • 6,875 career receiving yards (most by a running back in NFL history)
  • NFL 2000s All-Decade Team
  • Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee (2011)

Faulk finished his career with 19,154 yards from scrimmage, ranking fourth all-time, proving his ability to dominate both as a runner and a receiver.

A Star in Indianapolis – The Foundation of a Hall of Fame Career

Drafted 2nd overall by the Indianapolis Colts in 1994, Faulk made an instant impact, winning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after rushing for 1,282 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Over five seasons in Indianapolis, Faulk:

  • Rushed for over 1,000 yards four times
  • Became one of the best receiving backs in NFL history
  • Carried the Colts to the playoffs in 1995

Despite his success, Indianapolis eventually traded him to St. Louis in 1999 in one of the most lopsided trades in NFL history. What happened next was legendary.

The Greatest Show on Turf – Faulk’s Dominance in St. Louis

When Faulk arrived in St. Louis, he joined Kurt Warner, Isaac Bruce, and Torry Holt, forming the Greatest Show on Turf, the most explosive offense the league had ever seen.

  • 1999: Faulk led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory while posting 2,429 scrimmage yards, an NFL record at the time.
  • 2000: He won NFL MVP after racking up 26 total touchdowns, a single-season record at the time.
  • 2001: He helped the Rams reach another Super Bowl while winning his third straight Offensive Player of the Year award.

Faulk’s versatility made the Rams offense unstoppable, as defenses simply couldn’t cover him in space.

Defining Moments of Faulk’s Career

  • 1999 Super Bowl Run: Faulk was the centerpiece of the Greatest Show on Turf, leading the Rams to a Super Bowl victory.
  • 2000 MVP Season: Became the first running back to win NFL MVP since Barry Sanders, scoring 26 total touchdowns and totaling over 2,000 yards from scrimmage.
  • 1,000/1,000 Club: In 1999, Faulk became the first running back in NFL history to record 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a single season.
  • Hall of Fame Induction (2011): Faulk became a first-ballot Hall of Famer, cementing his place among the all-time greats.

The Legacy of Marshall Faulk – The Most Complete Running Back Ever

Marshall Faulk wasn’t just a great running back—he was a revolutionary. His ability to dominate as a rusher and receiver changed the way teams valued running backs, paving the way for modern dual-threat stars like Christian McCaffrey and Alvin Kamara.

Few players have ever matched Faulk’s combination of speed, vision, power, and hands, making him one of the most complete offensive weapons in NFL history. His influence is still seen today, and his impact on the game will never fade.

Marshall Faulk: A game-changer, a Hall of Famer, and one of the greatest running backs to ever play the game.
