Robin Yount

The Icon of Milwaukee Baseball

Robin Yount was the ultimate franchise player, spending his entire 20-year career with the Milwaukee Brewers and excelling as one of the most versatile and consistent players in baseball history. Known for his smooth transition from shortstop to center field, Yount became the cornerstone of the Brewers’ success and earned a reputation as a clutch performer and consummate professional. His rare combination of skill, durability, and humility made him a beloved figure in the game.

This collection celebrates Robin Yount—the Hall of Famer whose brilliance on the field and loyalty to Milwaukee defined an era.

A Career of Excellence: Stats and Achievements

Robin Yount’s career numbers reflect his greatness as an all-around player:

  • Batting Average: .285
  • Hits: 3,142 (20th all-time)
  • Home Runs: 251
  • RBIs: 1,406
  • Doubles: 583
  • Triples: 126
  • Runs Scored: 1,632
  • Stolen Bases: 271

Yount was a 2-time American League MVP (1982, 1989), a 3-time All-Star (1980, 1982, 1983), and a Gold Glove Award winner (1982). His ability to hit for average, power, and speed, coupled with his defensive excellence, made him one of the most well-rounded players in baseball history.

The Heart of the Milwaukee Brewers

Drafted by the Brewers as an 18-year-old in 1973, Yount quickly became the face of the franchise. As a shortstop, he dazzled with his range and arm strength, while his bat consistently delivered big hits. In 1982, Yount played a pivotal role in leading the Brewers to their first-ever World Series appearance, hitting .331 with 29 home runs and 114 RBIs during his MVP season.

Later in his career, Yount transitioned to center field to accommodate injuries and team needs, becoming equally adept at his new position. His seamless move demonstrated his selflessness and team-first mentality, further cementing his place as a Milwaukee legend.

The Two-Time MVP

Yount’s dual MVP awards showcased his brilliance at two different positions:

  • 1982 MVP Season (Shortstop):
Yount hit .331 with 29 home runs, 114 RBIs, 129 runs scored, and a league-leading .957 OPS. His all-around excellence propelled the Brewers to the AL pennant and solidified his status as one of the game’s premier players.

  • 1989 MVP Season (Center Fielder):
Late in his career, Yount won his second MVP award by hitting .318 with 21 home runs, 103 RBIs, and 19 stolen bases. His ability to remain elite while playing a new position underscored his remarkable adaptability and durability.

Two Stories That Define Robin Yount

  1. The 1982 World Series Heroics:
Despite the Brewers falling short against the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1982 World Series, Yount delivered an unforgettable performance. He became the first player in history to record two four-hit games in the same World Series, finishing with a .414 batting average and proving his ability to shine on the biggest stage.

  2. The Transition to Center Field:
In 1985, Yount made a selfless decision to move from shortstop to center field after shoulder injuries limited his throwing ability. His smooth transition and continued elite performance demonstrated his versatility and dedication to the team’s success.

The Lasting Legacy of Robin Yount

Robin Yount’s career was about more than numbers—it was about loyalty, adaptability, and a deep love for the game. As the heart and soul of the Brewers for two decades, he represented everything a franchise could want in a player: talent, work ethic, and humility.

Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999, Yount remains one of the most beloved figures in Milwaukee sports history. His jersey number 19 was retired by the Brewers, and his name is synonymous with the golden era of Brewers baseball.
