Patrick Mahomes

The Unstoppable Force Redefining the Quarterback Position

In the history of the NFL, few players have redefined the quarterback position quite like Patrick Mahomes. A two-time NFL MVP, three-time Super Bowl champion, and one of the most electrifying playmakers in football history, Mahomes has revolutionized the game with his rocket arm, incredible improvisation, and ability to dominate under pressure.

Since becoming the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018, Mahomes has taken the league by storm, leading the Chiefs to six straight AFC Championship appearances and three Super Bowl victories. His unique blend of athleticism, creativity, and poise under pressure has drawn comparisons to the greatest quarterbacks of all time, yet there’s something completely unique about Mahomes—he’s not just playing quarterback, he’s reinventing it.

With his no-look passes, sidearm throws, off-balance lasers, and absurd deep bombs, Mahomes has transformed how the position is played, inspiring a new generation of quarterbacks to think outside the box. Whether he’s escaping pressure, throwing across his body, or making an impossible play look effortless, Mahomes is must-watch television every single week.

Already on a Hall of Fame trajectory, Mahomes is on pace to become one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, and at just 28 years old (as of 2024), he’s only getting started.

The Numbers Behind Mahomes’ Greatness

  • Three-time Super Bowl Champion (LIV, LVII, LVIII)
  • Three-time Super Bowl MVP (LIV, LVII, LVIII)
  • Two-time NFL MVP (2018, 2022)
  • Six-time Pro Bowler (2018-2023)
  • Two-time First-Team All-Pro (2018, 2022)
  • NFL Offensive Player of the Year (2018)
  • Three-time AFC Champion (2019, 2022, 2023)
  • Fastest quarterback to 200 passing touchdowns (84 games)
  • Fastest quarterback to 25,000 passing yards (83 games)
  • Most passing yards in a single postseason (1,287 in 2022 playoffs)
  • Career Stats (through 2023):
    • 27,003 passing yards
    • 219 passing touchdowns
    • 66.5% completion percentage
    • 108.7 career passer rating
    • 2,800+ rushing yards & 13 rushing touchdowns

Mahomes has already shattered numerous records, and if he continues at this pace, he could own nearly every major passing record by the end of his career.

Texas Roots and a Star in the Making

Patrick Mahomes’ journey to NFL greatness began in Tyler, Texas, where he grew up in a family of athletes.

  • His father, Pat Mahomes Sr., was a Major League Baseball pitcher, which explains Patrick’s uncanny ability to throw from different angles and off-platform.
  • In high school, Mahomes was a three-sport star (football, baseball, basketball), showing elite athleticism in every sport he played.
  • Despite being a top baseball prospect, Mahomes chose football, committing to play at Texas Tech University.

At Texas Tech, Mahomes put up video game-like numbers in the Air Raid offense, displaying the same arm strength, creativity, and deep passing ability that would later make him a superstar in the NFL.

  • In 2016, Mahomes threw for 5,052 yards and 41 touchdowns, leading the nation in passing yards.
  • Despite his raw talent, NFL scouts questioned whether his playing style would translate to the pros.
  • The Kansas City Chiefs, however, saw his potential, trading up in the 2017 NFL Draft to select him with the 10th overall pick.

What happened next would change the course of the NFL forever.

The Rise of a Superstar – Taking Over the NFL

Mahomes spent his rookie season (2017) sitting behind veteran Alex Smith, learning the game under head coach Andy Reid. But when he finally got his chance to start in 2018, he exploded onto the scene like no quarterback before him.

  • In his first full season as a starter (2018), Mahomes threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns, becoming just the third quarterback in NFL history (after Peyton Manning and Tom Brady) to throw 50 TDs in a season.
  • He won the NFL MVP award, instantly becoming the most electrifying quarterback in the league.
  • He led the Chiefs to the AFC Championship Game, where they lost to Tom Brady’s Patriots in overtime—but it was clear that a new era had begun.

From that moment forward, the Mahomes era had officially arrived.

The Super Bowl Runs – A Dynasty is Born

Mahomes didn’t have to wait long to get his first ring.

  • In 2019, Mahomes led the Chiefs to Super Bowl LIV, where he engineered a 10-point comeback in the fourth quarter, defeating the San Francisco 49ers 31-20.
  • He was named Super Bowl MVP, becoming the youngest quarterback ever to win both NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP.
  • In 2020, he led the Chiefs back to the Super Bowl, but they fell to Tom Brady’s Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV.
  • In 2022 (Super Bowl LVII), Mahomes delivered another masterpiece, leading a comeback against the Philadelphia Eagles and securing his second championship and Super Bowl MVP.
  • In 2023 (Super Bowl LVIII), he did it again, outdueling the 49ers in overtime for his third ring in five years—a feat that only Tom Brady and a few others have accomplished.

With three Super Bowls in five seasons, Mahomes is already building a dynasty in Kansas City, and at just 28 years old, there’s no telling how many more rings he’ll win.

Defining Moments of Mahomes’ Career

  • 2018 – MVP Breakout Season: Throws for 50 touchdowns and over 5,000 yards, winning NFL MVP in his first season as a starter.
  • 2019 – Super Bowl LIV Champion: Leads the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl victory in 50 years, earning Super Bowl MVP honors.
  • 2022 – Super Bowl LVII Comeback: Plays through an ankle injury, leads a second-half comeback against the Eagles, and wins his second Super Bowl MVP.
  • 2023 – Super Bowl LVIII Thriller: Delivers another comeback victory over the 49ers in overtime, cementing his dynasty status.

A Legacy in the Making – The Best is Yet to Come

  • He has multiple Super Bowl titles, MVPs, and records, with plenty of time to add more.
  • He’s on pace to break nearly every major passing record in history.
  • He’s redefining the quarterback position with creativity, improvisation, and raw talent.

At just 28 years old, Mahomes is now chasing Tom Brady’s legacy, and if he continues on this path, he may one day be regarded as the greatest quarterback of all time.
