1914 Cracker Jack #34 Ira Thomas PSA 2 - A Catcher from Connie Mack’s First Dynasty
The 1914 Cracker Jack #34 Ira Thomas takes collectors directly into the championship years of the Philadelphia Athletics. Thomas served behind the plate for Connie Mack during one of the most dominant stretches in franchise history, sharing a clubhouse with legends including Home Run Baker, Eddie Collins, Chief Bender, and Eddie Plank. Set against Cracker Jack’s unmistakable red background, his portrait represents a supporting member of one of the Deadball Era’s great baseball dynasties.
Graded PSA GOOD 2, this example has survived more than 110 years from an issue famous for its difficult original distribution. The 1914 cards were placed directly inside packages of Cracker Jack, exposing them to the caramel-coated contents along with handling, staining, creasing, and surface wear. That history gives lower-grade examples a particularly authentic quality—these were cards that were actually pulled from boxes of Cracker Jack during the summer of 1914.
Thomas was part of Athletics teams that captured three World Series championships in four seasons from 1910 through 1913, before Philadelphia returned to the Fall Classic once again in the very year this card was issued. His role behind the plate connected him directly to one of the greatest pitching staffs and collections of talent of the period.
