1952 Topps #1 Andy Pafko PSA 4 - The Card That Started It All

Every legendary set has a beginning, and for 1952 Topps, that distinction belongs to Andy Pafko. Card #1 opened the 407-card checklist that would forever change baseball-card collecting, placing the Brooklyn Dodgers outfielder at the front of what became the defining postwar set. Pafko was already an established major leaguer by 1952, having spent years with the Cubs before joining a Brooklyn club headed toward another National League pennant.

Graded PSA VG-EX 4, this example carries significance far beyond Pafko’s career alone. It is quite literally the starting point of the 1952 Topps set—the first card in a series filled with Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Eddie Mathews, and, ultimately, Mickey Mantle. The bold red background, oversized format, team logo, facsimile signature, and detailed player portrait introduced collectors to a dramatically different kind of baseball card.

Pafko enjoyed a 17-year Major League career, earned five All-Star selections, and appeared in four World Series, winning a championship with Milwaukee in 1957. Yet in the collecting world, his name will always carry another distinction. Before collectors could reach any of the immortals buried within the 1952 Topps checklist, they had to start here. Card #1. Andy Pafko. The opening page of one of the greatest baseball-card sets ever produced.
