There is an added prestige to being card #1, and in 1966 Topps could hardly have chosen a more appropriate player to open the set than Willie Mays. The 1966 Topps #1 presents the Giants superstar with the clean, straightforward aesthetic of the era, placing one of baseball’s most recognizable faces at the very front of the checklist. By this point, Mays was no longer building a reputation—he was reigning over the National League as its defending MVP and firmly established as one of the greatest players the sport had ever seen.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8, this example is particularly appealing because #1 cards faced their own unique condition challenges.
