Sharing the card with fellow Mets pitcher Jerry Koosman, the 21-year-old Ryan appears simply as another promising young arm in the New York organization. Yet this unassuming rookie card would become the cardboard beginning of one of baseball’s most extraordinary pitching careers—a man whose fastball, longevity, and strikeout totals eventually pushed the boundaries of what seemed possible from a Major League pitcher.
