1914 Cracker Jack #11 George Stovall PSA 2 - A Federal League Figure in Cracker Jack Red
The 1914 Cracker Jack #11 George Stovall comes from a season of enormous change in professional baseball. Stovall had already spent years in the American League as both a player and manager before joining the newly formed Federal League, becoming player-manager of the Kansas City Packers. His Cracker Jack issue therefore captures more than an individual player—it represents a fascinating moment when a third major league was actively challenging the established baseball order.
Graded PSA GOOD 2, this example has survived more than 110 years from a set where survival itself is part of the story. Unlike the following year’s issue, 1914 Cracker Jacks were inserted directly into packages of the caramel-coated snack, leaving cards vulnerable to staining, handling, creasing, and surface wear from day one. The famous deep red background remains one of the most unmistakable designs in pre-war collecting and gives even the set’s lesser-known subjects tremendous visual character.
Stovall spent more than a decade in the majors, primarily as a first baseman, before becoming an important figure during the Federal League experiment. His career connected the Cleveland Naps, St. Louis Browns, and ultimately the upstart league that briefly disrupted baseball’s established structure.
