1914 Cracker Jack #127 Butch Schmidt PSA 2 - A Giant from Cracker Jack’s First Edition

The 1914 Cracker Jack #127 Butch Schmidt captures the young first baseman during his first full season with the Boston Braves—and what a season it would become. Framed against the unmistakable deep red background that defines the issue, Schmidt’s portrait belongs to one of the most visually powerful sets of the Deadball Era. More than a century later, the simplicity of the design remains part of its magic: player, name, team, and that unmistakable Cracker Jack red.

Graded PSA GOOD 2, this example carries the character expected from an original 1914 survivor. These cards were inserted directly into packages of Cracker Jack, making staining, creasing, surface wear, and general handling almost part of their DNA. Unlike cards that were carefully preserved from the outset, the first Cracker Jack issue was literally packaged alongside caramel-coated popcorn and peanuts, making surviving examples tangible reminders of how differently baseball cards were originally consumed.

Schmidt’s appearance is especially interesting because 1914 became the season of the legendary “Miracle Braves.” After sitting in last place on July 4, Boston staged one of baseball’s greatest turnarounds, storming to the National League pennant before sweeping the heavily favored Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series. Schmidt was right in the middle of it, serving as Boston’s regular first baseman and leading the National League in hits during that championship season.
