1952 Topps #97 Earl Torgeson PSA 5.5 - The Earl of Snohomish
The 1952 Topps #97 Earl Torgeson features one of the more distinctive personalities in the Boston Braves lineup. Known as “The Earl of Snohomish,” Torgeson paired a patient approach at the plate with excellent speed for a first baseman, giving Boston an unusual combination of on-base ability and athleticism at the position.
Graded PSA EX+ 5.5, this example catches Torgeson during the heart of his Braves tenure. He had already played an important role on Boston’s 1948 National League pennant-winning club, and by 1952 had established himself as a veteran presence in the lineup. The 5.5 half-grade gives this card a little extra distinction within the complete set.
Torgeson spent 15 seasons in the Major Leagues, compiling more than 1,200 hits, 149 home runs, and nearly 1,000 walks while playing for five organizations. His speed was particularly uncommon for a first baseman—he stole 20 or more bases five times and led the National League with 20 steals in 1950. The 1952 Topps Earl Torgeson PSA 5.5 celebrates a player who refused to fit the traditional first-base mold—part power hitter, part table-setter, and always one of the more intriguing players of his era.
