1909-11 T206 Sweet Caporal Joe Birmingham PSA VG-EX 4
T206 Sweet Caporal Joe Birmingham PSA 4 – Cleveland's Rifle-Armed Center Fielder
From the legendary 1909–1911 T206 tobacco card issue, the most iconic pre-war baseball set ever produced. Distributed through cigarette packs by the American Tobacco Company, the series documented players from the hard-nosed Deadball Era with colorful, detailed lithographic artwork that collectors have prized for over a century.
Joe "Dode" Birmingham spent his entire major league career with the Cleveland Naps, carving out a reputation as one of the finest defensive center fielders in the American League. His throwing arm was legendary — teammates and sportswriters compared it to a Mauser rifle — and he led AL center fielders in assists twice during his peak seasons. Birmingham shared the outfield at various points with Hall of Famer Elmer Flick and the young Shoeless Joe Jackson, batted .304 in 1911, and later served as the Naps' player-manager beginning in 1912 at just 27 years old.
This card features the Sweet Caporal advertising reverse and carries a PSA VG-EX 4 grade, displaying solid overall presentation with moderate wear appropriate for a tobacco card printed more than a century ago. A fine representation of one of Cleveland's most dependable Deadball Era contributors.
