T206 Sweet Caporal Joe Doyle – N.Y. Hands Above Head PSA 4 – One Pose, Two Legends

From the landmark 1909–1911 T206 tobacco card series, the most celebrated pre-war baseball issue in the hobby. Produced by the American Tobacco Company and distributed through cigarette packs, the set captured the players of baseball's Deadball Era in vibrant, richly detailed lithographic color.

Judd "Slow Joe" Doyle was a right-handed pitcher for the New York Highlanders whose modest 22–21 career record would hardly warrant special attention — except that his card in the T206 set carries one of the most storied production stories in hobby history. The "Hands Above Head" pose bears the designation "N.Y." after a printer's error originally labeled him as "N.Y. Nat'l" — confusing him with Giants second baseman Larry Doyle — was quickly corrected by removing the league designation entirely. The rare uncorrected "Nat'l" error version is considered rarer than even the Honus Wagner. The standard corrected version offered here remains a beloved entry in any T206 collection and a direct gateway to one of the most fascinating production stories the hobby has ever known.

This example features the "Hands Above Head" pitching pose paired with the Sweet Caporal advertising reverse and carries a PSA VG-EX 4 grade, presenting sharply with solid overall eye appeal for a card printed more than a century ago. A must-have for collectors who appreciate the mythology woven into the T206 checklist.
