The T204 Ramly Kid Elberfeld belongs to one of the most sophisticated tobacco-card issues of the Deadball Era. Produced around 1909, the Ramly set abandoned the bright colors associated with many early tobacco cards in favor of ornate borders and beautifully rendered black-and-white portraits, giving the issue an almost photographic formality. Elberfeld—whose surname appears as “Elberfield” on the card—was anything but formal on the diamond. Nicknamed the “Tabasco Kid” for his fiery temperament and aggressive style, he was one of the era’s most colorful competitors.

Graded PSA VG-EX 4, this example offers a strong representation of Elberfeld within the distinctive T204 series. Elberfeld spent 14 seasons in the major leagues, most notably with the New York Highlanders, the franchise that would eventually become the Yankees. His willingness to crowd the plate and absorb punishment became part of his reputation, while his intensity made the “Tabasco Kid” nickname especially fitting. He later became New York’s player-manager in 1908 and continued in professional baseball for decades as a minor-league player and manager.
