1914 Cracker Jack #64 Jimmy Archer PSA 2 - The Man Behind the Archer Squat
The 1914 Cracker Jack #64 Jimmy Archer features one of the most respected defensive catchers of the Deadball Era. Best remembered for his years behind the plate with the Chicago Cubs, Archer developed a reputation for his powerful throwing arm and unusual crouching style—a technique influenced by an industrial accident earlier in his life that left him with physical limitations. Against the unmistakable Cracker Jack red, Archer becomes another beautifully simple portrait from one of pre-war baseball’s defining sets.
Graded PSA GOOD 2, this example carries more than 110 years of history from an issue never designed with long-term preservation in mind. The 1914 Cracker Jacks were inserted directly into packages of the caramel-coated snack, exposing the cards to staining, handling, creasing, and surface wear immediately upon release. That difficult origin story gives surviving examples a character all their own, particularly when preserved and authenticated today.
Archer became Chicago’s primary catcher during an important period in Cubs history and was highly regarded for his work behind the plate. His distinctive low crouch became so closely associated with him that it was often referred to as the “Archer squat,” helping make him one of the more recognizable catchers of his generation.
