The 1939 Play Ball #51 Mel Ott presents one of the National League’s greatest sluggers with exactly the kind of simplicity the inaugural Play Ball set does best. Its stark black-and-white photography and clean white borders leave the player to carry the card, and few were more worthy of the spotlight than the longtime New York Giants star. By the time this card appeared, Ott was only 30 years old yet had already surpassed 300 career home runs, establishing himself as one of the most dangerous power hitters of his generation.
