1940 Play Ball #1 Joe DiMaggio PSA 7 - The Yankee Clipper Leads Off

The 1940 Play Ball #1 Joe DiMaggio gives one of baseball’s defining superstars the distinction of opening one of the era’s great sets. Gum Inc.’s second Play Ball release retained the wonderfully understated black-and-white photography and clean presentation that made the series feel more like a collection of miniature press photographs than traditional baseball cards. With DiMaggio occupying the coveted #1 position, the checklist begins with a player who, at just 25 years old, was already becoming the face of the New York Yankees and one of the biggest names in American sports.

Graded PSA NM 7, this example carries an additional condition challenge inherent to its placement in the set. Vintage #1 cards were particularly susceptible to wear, often sitting at the front of collections and stacks where corners, edges, and surfaces received greater exposure. The generous white borders of the 1940 Play Ball design also make centering immediately apparent. Preserved at the PSA 7 level more than eight decades later, this is an impressive example of an important DiMaggio issue with both condition and set-position significance.

DiMaggio entered 1940 already a three-time World Series champion and the reigning 1939 American League MVP, but one of his greatest achievements was still a year away. In 1941, he would hit safely in 56 consecutive games, establishing a record that remains untouched more than eight decades later. He eventually retired with a .325 average, 361 home runs, three MVP Awards and nine World Series championships, forever becoming synonymous with the Yankees’ golden age.
