The 1940 Play Ball #225 Joe Jackson is unlike nearly every other major card in the set. When Gum Inc. issued it, “Shoeless Joe” had been out of Major League Baseball for two decades, making this not a contemporary player issue but an intentional look back at one of the game’s most fascinating figures. Presented in the beautifully simple black-and-white style of 1940 Play Ball, Jackson’s inclusion gave collectors of the era a cardboard connection to a player whose career had already passed into baseball folklore.

Graded PSA NM 7, this example survives in exceptional condition for an 86-year-old issue. The broad white borders and monochromatic photography of the 1940 set place tremendous emphasis on centering, corners, surface quality, and image registration, while Jackson’s enduring popularity makes his card one of the most compelling subjects in the checklist.
