1952 Topps #119 Maurice McDermott PSA PSA 5 - The Southpaw with a Golden Arm
Long before he became an established Major League pitcher, Maurice “Mickey” McDermott was turning heads with one of the most electric left arms in professional baseball. Signed by the Boston Red Sox as a teenager, McDermott quickly earned a reputation for his overpowering fastball and extraordinary strikeout ability. His 1952 Topps #119 arrived during a pivotal season in his young career, as the talented southpaw began translating his tremendous potential into success at the Major League level. At just 23 years old, McDermott was emerging as one of Boston's most intriguing young pitchers.
Graded PSA EX 5, this example offers an appealing representation of McDermott from Topps' landmark 1952 baseball-card production. The Excellent designation provides a respectable level of preservation for an original issue more than seven decades old, making this a desirable addition to the historic 407-card checklist. McDermott's appearance at #119 is particularly interesting because it features the young left-hander before his most successful Major League seasons. This PSA 5 example combines the charm of Topps' inaugural major set with an early portrait of a pitcher whose remarkable talent had already attracted considerable attention throughout professional baseball.
McDermott's potential was evident long before he reached Boston. In 1949, while pitching for Louisville in the American Association, he recorded an extraordinary 20-strikeout game, demonstrating the exceptional power of his left arm. His Major League breakthrough came in 1952, when he finished 10–9 with a 3.43 ERA, followed by a career-best 18 victories in 1953.
