1952 Topps #54 Leo Kiely Black Back PSA EX 5
1952 Topps #54 Leo Kiely Black Back PSA 5 - The Rookie Who Returned to Boston
The 1952 Topps #54 Leo Kiely features a young Red Sox left-hander at the very beginning of an unusual Major League journey. Kiely debuted for Boston in 1951 at just 21 years old, making an immediate impression out of the bullpen before his baseball career was interrupted by military service during the Korean War.
This example is graded PSA EX 5 and features the Black Back variation. The timing of the card makes it particularly interesting: although Kiely appears as a member of the Red Sox, he spent the 1952 season serving in the United States Army rather than pitching at Fenway. His Topps card therefore preserves the promising young pitcher just as his Major League career was temporarily placed on hold.
Kiely returned to Boston and resumed his career in 1954, ultimately spending seven Major League seasons with the Red Sox and Kansas City Athletics. He was used primarily in relief, finishing with 26 victories and 29 saves under modern scoring. The 1952 Topps Leo Kiely Black Back PSA 5 carries a story larger than its statistics—a young Major Leaguer whose path through baseball paused for military service before bringing him back to the mound in Boston.
