1952 Topps #59 Robin Roberts Black Back PSA 6 - The Workhorse of the Whiz Kids

The 1952 Topps #59 Robin Roberts features one of the defining pitchers of the 1950s just as he was entering the most dominant stretch of his Hall of Fame career. Roberts had already helped carry Philadelphia’s celebrated “Whiz Kids” to the 1950 National League pennant, but in 1952 he elevated himself from young ace to one of baseball’s premier pitchers.

This PSA EX-MT 6 features the Black Back variation and comes from an extraordinary season for the Phillies right-hander. Roberts went 28–7 in 1952, leading the National League in victories while completing 30 of his 37 starts. It began a remarkable run of six consecutive 20-win seasons, all while carrying one of the heaviest workloads in baseball.

Roberts finished his career with 286 victories, 305 complete games, and seven All-Star selections, eventually earning induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976. Few pitchers of his generation combined excellence and durability at such a sustained level. The 1952 Topps Robin Roberts Black Back PSA 6 is especially meaningful because of its timing—a card issued during the very season a Phillies ace began one of the great pitching runs of the decade.
