1952 Topps #64 Roy Sievers Black Back PSA 4 - The Rookie of the Year Before the Power Years
The 1952 Topps #64 Roy Sievers features a young slugger whose Major League career had already opened with considerable promise. Sievers burst onto the scene with the St. Louis Browns in 1949, hitting 16 home runs and earning the American League Rookie of the Year Award at just 22 years old.
This example is graded PSA VG-EX 4 and features the Black Back variation. Sievers was still with St. Louis when this card was issued, several years before a move to Washington would unlock the biggest offensive seasons of his career. That timing gives #64 an appealing quality—Topps caught Sievers after his first major accolade, but before he became one of the American League’s most feared power hitters.
Sievers eventually became a five-time All-Star, surpassing 20 home runs in eight different seasons. His masterpiece came in 1957, when he led the American League with 42 home runs and 114 RBI and finished third in MVP voting. He retired with 318 career homers and more than 1,100 RBI. The 1952 Topps Roy Sievers Black Back PSA 4 shows the former Rookie of the Year with his greatest slugging seasons still ahead—an early card of a player who would become a fixture on the American League home run leaderboards.
