1952 Topps #68 Cliff Chambers Black Back PSA 5 - A No-Hit Lefty in Pittsburgh

The 1952 Topps #68 Cliff Chambers features the veteran southpaw during his time with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Chambers had already spent several seasons in the National League by this point, but one afternoon in Chicago had permanently secured his place in baseball history: on May 6, 1951, he threw a no-hitter against the Boston Braves.

This PSA EX 5 features the Black Back variation, pairing a strong mid-grade example with a pitcher who had recently authored the defining performance of his career. Chambers’ Pirates portrait comes from an interesting moment as well, as 1952 would bring a midseason trade to the St. Louis Cardinals and begin the final chapter of his Major League career.

Chambers pitched parts of six Major League seasons for the Cubs, Pirates, and Cardinals, winning 48 games while working primarily as a starter. Yet his name will always carry the distinction reserved for the relatively small fraternity of pitchers who completed nine innings without allowing a hit. The 1952 Topps Cliff Chambers Black Back PSA 5 arrived barely a year after that masterpiece—a card of a pitcher who had already earned his own permanent line in baseball history.
