1952 Topps #81 Vernon Law PSA 6 - Before the Deacon Became Pittsburgh’s Ace
The 1952 Topps #81 Vernon Law features the young Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander years before he would reach the pinnacle of National League pitching. Nicknamed “The Deacon,” Law had reached the majors at just 20 years old in 1950, beginning what would become a remarkably long association with the Pirates.
Graded PSA EX-MT 6, this card catches Law at an especially early point in his story. His career was soon interrupted by military service, keeping him away from the Major Leagues for the 1952 and 1953 seasons. That makes his appearance in the 1952 Topps set an intriguing snapshot—a young pitcher pictured before a two-year absence and well before his greatest accomplishments.
Law returned to Pittsburgh and eventually developed into the ace of a championship staff. His masterpiece came in 1960, when he went 20–9, captured the Cy Young Award, and helped the Pirates defeat the Yankees in one of the most memorable World Series ever played. The 1952 Topps Vernon Law PSA 6 comes eight years before that triumph—an early card of “The Deacon” before the Cy Young, before the championship, and before Pittsburgh knew just how good he would become.
