The 1961 Topps #287 Carl Yastrzemski Star Rookie captures one of Boston’s greatest players at the very beginning of his major-league journey. Although Yastrzemski first appeared on a Topps card in 1960, this second-year issue carries the distinctive Topps Star Rookie designation and was released during his actual rookie season. At just 21 years old, Yaz was stepping into perhaps the most intimidating assignment in baseball—taking over left field at Fenway Park immediately after the retirement of Ted Williams.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8, this example represents a strong high-grade card from the earliest chapter of Yastrzemski’s career. There is something particularly compelling about the timing of the issue: the 1960 card introduced the prospect, while the 1961 Star Rookie shows Yaz as a major leaguer, beginning the first of what would become 23 consecutive seasons in a Red Sox uniform.
