1961 Topps #388 Bob (Roberto) Clemente PSA 8 - Fresh Off a Championship

The 1961 Topps #388 Bob Clemente arrived at a pivotal moment in Roberto Clemente’s career. Pittsburgh had just stunned baseball by defeating the powerhouse Yankees in the 1960 World Series, giving Clemente his first championship and transforming the Pirates into baseball royalty. Topps still identified him as “Bob Clemente” on the card, an interesting reminder of an era before the name Roberto Clemente would carry almost unparalleled significance throughout baseball and far beyond it.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8, this example pairs an important early-1960s Clemente issue with impressive preservation. The 1961 Topps design is restrained and photography-driven, putting additional emphasis on centering, image quality, corners, and the cleanliness of the borders and surface. Clemente cards have become a collecting category unto themselves, and a PSA 8 from this stage of his career offers an appealing combination of vintage condition and a subject whose importance has only continued to grow with time.

What collectors in 1961 couldn't yet know was that Clemente was about to enter another level. That season he captured his first National League batting title with a .351 average, beginning a decade that would bring four batting crowns, an MVP Award, extraordinary defensive dominance in right field, and ultimately his 3,000th hit.
