1964 Topps Stand-Up Ernie Banks PSA 8 - Mr. Cub Stands Apart
The 1964 Topps Stand-Up Ernie Banks is anything but a conventional baseball card. Designed with a die-cut upper portion that allowed collectors to literally fold the card and stand the player upright, the issue transformed baseball’s biggest stars into miniature cardboard displays. Banks is a perfect subject for the format—bright, charismatic, and already firmly established as the face of Chicago baseball. With its bold yellow-and-green presentation and unmistakable shape, this is one of the most visually distinctive Ernie Banks issues of the 1960s.
Graded PSA NM-MT 8, this example is especially impressive given the very feature that made Stand-Ups fun in the first place. The die-cut design invited kids to punch out and fold the cards along their factory creases, meaning many surviving examples were altered simply by being enjoyed as intended. Add the susceptibility of the edges, corners, surfaces, and perforated areas to wear, and finding an unfolded, high-grade PSA 8 of a major Hall of Famer becomes a far different proposition than a standard 1964 issue.
By 1964, “Mr. Cub” had already won consecutive National League MVP Awards and established himself as the greatest power-hitting shortstop the game had seen. He would ultimately finish with 512 home runs, 14 All-Star selections, and an entire 19-year Major League career spent in a Cubs uniform, becoming one of the most beloved figures in franchise history.
